Audi Avant 2.5tdi Estate Gearbox??

Hi there just bought a 2002 Audi a4. 2.5tdi v6.Multitronic. When I bought car there was a shudder when car in Lower rpm. It is most evident when slowing down approaching traffic lights etc anyway brought it in to audi garage an i've been told car needs new gear box!! At cost of 6000euros!!
Has anybody experienced anything like this before?
any suggestions??
