Hi,

Has anyone self-applied the supaguard paint protection before? If so, how did you get on? If you were thinking about it and you didn't do it, why didn't you???

Thanks

:)

These products have their place in the market. If you're the sort of person who wants a reasonable looking car and wash ityourself every 2 weeks then it's an alternative to some of the wash n wax products. It's a better option to letting the local sponge monkeys or automatic car wash ruin your paintwork.

But it's not going to win you any shine n show competitions!

I diamonbrited my fathers new A3 a few weeks ago, starting by stripping off any factory/dealer applied products with a full washdown in citric based wash. It's easy enough to applied and buff off. Diamonbrited have their own shampoo/conditioner that you use to supposedly top up the treatment.

Personally I think it's rubbish, and a month in my fathers thinking the same. There is nowhere near the water beading or depth of shine you get from good carnauba waxes but that's one of the compromises you have to accept against waxing frequently.

As above it's a load of crap. You are better off getting yourself some Autoglym Super Resin Polish and Extra Gloss Protection at a minimum.

I chose to have the Autoglym Lifeshine applied by the dealer. Main reason was the 10 year Autoglym guarantee it comes with. Any paint/interior marks that you cannot remove yourself, Autoglym will repair themselves. If they cant sort the problem they wil replace the item. You dont get this guarantee with the "ebay specials".

As I have cream leather this seemed a very sensible option and although quite pricey represents a fraction of the cars overall cost. Hopefully I will never have to put the guarantee to test!

Do however play hardball with the dealer over the cost - I managed to get a good chunk off the price.

I've just received the dealer's letter (car ordered from drivethedeal) and it includes an autoglym brochure. I've just read this string but can't find what the standard price is for this option, as the dealers didn't include it. If it isn't too expensive I'll probably take it, for the same reason as the last poster - 10 yr guarantee.

Any advice or personal experiences with this would be appreciated.

I was initially quoted £350 for the AutoGlym lifeshine package which I declined. When I picked the car up I asked what extras are you going to give me for waiting another month. They said what do you have in mind? I said you can put the cruise control on it. Oh no thats too expensive. Not its not it £60 for the switch and you just programme the system to accept it, but they wouldn't.

They said I can have the AutoGlym package at half price £175 so I had that. I didn't have any info on it but I went back in the dealers later on and the brouchure said it has a 10 year guarantee. ;)

Thanks keith.

I doubt if my dealer will do anything like that as I've purchased from an on-line broker, saving 11% off list!

What do you think of the finish? Would you have paid the full price?

Well I've use Autoglym for the past 8 years and I've found that its easy to put on and polish of and it will last for a year as I've said in another topic about polishes. You don't get the large bubbles of water when it rains but you can still see it has polish on there.

The main reason I wanted this package is because I use a flask for work and in my old car is would sometimes leak on the seat and leave the brown coffee stain. With the Autoglym protection is should easily wipe off and it does.

Would I have paided full price no. ;)

Personally I think it's a waste of money. I'd rather use that £300 and get someone who does proper car detailing to do my car twice over the period I own it. I don't have kids so don't have to worry about annoying stains lol. Nobody is allowed to eat or drink in the car so I have those bases covered as well. That's just me though. I'd imagine you could buy some vax water vacuum thing to wet clean your carpets and seats for not a lot of money as well, so there is the interior covered.

Also the 10 year guarantee isn't transferable AIUI. So won't help your resale value when the time comes... unless people see it as a sign the car has been looked after.

So maybe not such a bad idea!

Lidl sell a cheap fabric guard occasionally for a couple of quid that does the job of protecting the fabric just as good as the one the dealer sells for £££.

As for the paint, like others I would rather get it done by a detailer who specialises in this kind of work. For that kind of money they will be correcting the paintwork whereas the dealer is only rubbing on and then off a chemical that can be had for only a few pounds yet they are willing to rip you off for the princely some of £350!!!

Thanks all.

I think I'll put my money towards a proper detailer. Like Sco3ott, I don't have to worry about young kids - although I know a few adults who I DO have to worry about! :alcoholic
