Hello folks,

i am looking at buying an 1997 A6 2.5tdi Auto Estate .......I would like to know if there are any inherent problems with the gearboxes on these cars??....Or on the 2.5 unit itself...The vehicle has covered just 71k.....If there are, how could I identify such problems???

Cheers....Steve

The box will cost about 1000 pounds to put right when it goes. I would take "low" mileage with a pinch of salt, better check the MOT history on http://http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539
and hope it all adds up. You need the registration number and the last MOT certificate/long number. The 5 cylinder lump is the best audi lump they came up to date and will last hundreds of thousands of miles. Make shure the belts and water pumps were replaced or knock money off as they are due...

Its a 13 year old motorway cruiser so 71k is less than half the expected average mileage.
These cars had to be doing high mileage to make them economical depreciation-wise.
71k should have set alarm bells ringing and most people would have been suspicious and attempted to corroborate it. Never mind.

It is a reliable transmission if the fluid is changed. Have the fluid and filter changed, and the diff oil changed with the correct fluid and if there is no problem already it will hopefully help prevent it.

Yes, like most cars, they are easy to clock with a laptop and the right software.
