Hi All,

I have an 02 A4 B6 1.8T which is intermittently sluggish under load.

When I accelerate away from slowing down "say in second or third gear" the car feels like it is mis firing or sluggish between 1000-2000 rpm.

I have change all 4 coils within the last 20000 miles and 4 prong plugs are in there abt 10000 miles, just serviced too abt 2000 miles ago.

I have ran a full engine scan on VAG.COM with zero engine faults.

It is starting to get slightly worse day by day.

Car idles perfectly and once past 2000rpm is fine also.

Im hoping its not a possible compression problem.

Any ideas guys???

Thanks..

Have you tried sticking some cleaner in the fuel tank? Sounds like it might be coked up which dents performance and can be caused by using normal unleaded.

Best to to use super unleaded like Shell Optimax for turbo engines.

Tks for reply dark horse,

I thought abt the fuel scenario alright and the filter replacement has crossed my mind.

What type of cleaner would you recommend?
Will the cleaner work if there is ***** in the tank?

You are prob right abt the fuel, but honestly, what benifits will i see for 10cent extra a litre.

I have had it on standard unleaded for the last 5 years, so will prob stay there unless someone can convince me otherwise..

Is there much to a fuel filter replacement on this model?

Appreciate all info

Tks, B

Regarding fuel, I've started using super-unleaded (Shell VPower) in my 1.8T.

I'm getting about 10-15% better economy for the 5% extra cost, plus it's more responsive (obviously) and seems smoother.

i filll up super unleaded every 3rd fill in my 1.8T.
i think there is slightly improved performance and also a slightly improved performance, wether it's worth the extra money i'm not sure.

especially as on my commute in the area i live in there always traffiic along the B roads due to stoopid morons not driving properly and also a lot of schools, so that kinda kills my economy, but on A roads and motorways i get awesome fuel economy, and power in reserve

I only use Tesco's super unleaded because it's 99ron and probably the best petrol station fuel out there, i've done all the others and Tesco's always feels the sharpish of the lot.

I also use redex every full tank or every 2-3 weeks as I do a lot of "around town" driving.

Fill your car up with some super and a bottle of redex and take it for a good varied drive, eg. motorway and a bit of B-road - whilst your at it, check your tyre temps as well!

I have got slightly the same problem. I have a 1.8T 163 BHP and it’s not going as quick as it did when I first bought it. I was thinking that I should get a full service, would that help? Has someone tried the VPower petrol, does it help?

Use nothing but VPower and it makes the world of difference. Service also helps, just had mine done and it feels sharper.

a lot of people rave about Shell v-power, however i'm in agreement with Jiggy.
Tesco super seems to be the best of the lot in my experience.
and every now and again they do the 5p of fuel promotion.
i filled up a fuel tank of super the other day at tesco for 118p/litre

by the way fuiel prices are extorianate.
anyway a service should help as well

Cool, I'll try Tesco Super Unleaded next time. Always a bit wary of supermarket fuel though, detergent packs are suspect plus there was that whole Tesco fuel contamination thing few years back. And in my neck of the woods, Shell costs the same as Tesco Super Unleaded, often cheaper.

Bottom line, if it's good enough for Ferrari, it's good enough for me :approve:

Firstly thanks for the fast replies..
I agree with you on that.. In the last 20 mins I’ve just booked the car in for a full service at an Audi specialist, he normally does performance Audi’s that should sharpen the car up a bit. Plus it thinks from now on I’m only going to use VPower, as I have never used it.

fair play if the price is the same then yea i think i'd probably go for shell too.

Throttle body might need cleaning possibly?

thanks dark horse, is there much to doing this?

What abt the fuel filter, is there much involved in this either?

Cheers..

I had mine done at a local indy as the breather valve also needed replacing. Need to wait for the engine to be stone cold though and it took about an hour plus you need tiny hands apparently to get in between all the parts.

Unsure about fuel filter, not had to have mine done.
