gear linkage

heya guys, after selling my A4 and now finding my way back to a 1998 Sharan TDI i have a slight question before i start digging. I have bought a nice cheap Sharan today TDI model 1998 that needs a little tlc cosmetically. mechanically it seems sound bar one thing. the spring has gone missing from the gear linkage i think as when it is in neutral you can move it around without it springing back (if this makes sense) also the car goes into gears really niceley but when in there it feels all wobbly and slack. is this just a gear linkage issue that i replace under the gaiter?

any info or feedback is greatly appreciated.
