Hello all, i joined the forum today as i think it is really time to get what i think could be a major problem on my Passat, but hope it is not an expensive one , basically i have had my Passat for about 6 months the first 5 have been perfect no problems but recently it has started losing coolant, and lots of it, it loses approx 1.5 litres every day,but it does not lose it all over the floor when at standstill or idling either,as i left it for an hour running on a ramp with no obvious leaks visible.
The oil appears to be fine with no sludge etc and i removed the undertrays too before checking for dripping , i do a lot of motorway miles, around 80 a day with about 20 miles stop and start too , and it is a 2001 TDi sport 130 bhp model and has done 130k miles, the other thing of note is that occasionally about once a week or not even that often the heating runs cold and the temp needle beings creeping up to nearly the red, the first time it happened i pulled over but after i had the needle began dropping back to its usual halfway position and the heating returned to normal, apart from those odd moments the heating runs fine,as i tend not to use the climatronic .
After first noticing the leak, which luckily was due to the excellent STOP warning you get so i checked and it was below min, so topped up but it has been like this for about 3 weeks now , i noticed when i took the cap off the first time there was no hissing noise even though the car was to temp, so i replaced the cap, and since then it does hiss when you take it off if the cars warm or it even hisses a little when the car is cold, but i noticed that the coolant level does rise a little bit back into the expansion tank when i do this .
I have noticed that when you push the car harder it loses the coolant more rapidly, but if you drive very sedately the coolant loss is a lot less severe , i had the oil and filter changed a few weeks ago and that was ok, and apart from this really worrying problem the cars been fine , sorry for the long winded post but i thought i had better give as much info as possible, so i hope you guys can help me out, many thanks,Dennis.
p.s the only thing i have had time to check is the actual leaking ,apart from that not checked anything else yet .

If you do a search on the B5 forum you'll find many people have had this, with various causes and fixes. Problem has been cured in some cases by replacing the expansion tank cap if you're one of the lucky ones (cheap to do), which can 'leak', to a leaky radiator which is sometimes hard to spot (usually bottom corners go first), to head gasket, to worn/leaky coolant pump, to name a few.
Hope it's one of the cheaper fixes for you. The search facility is on the right near the top of the 'post counters', at the start of the B5 main posting page.

The radiator on the Passat is prone to corrosion, this happened to my car..

The leak on my car was gradual and them got worse and worse..

They usually leak in one corner of the rad, if i were you i would look there first.. Its a common problem.

Sometimes my radiator leaks, but it dries to a pink crust before it has chance to drip on the floor. Also if it leaks onto the plastic tray, it has insulation that could soak a couple of litres before dripping on the floor I suspect.

Changed my Rad' not so long back ( Eurocarparts less than £70 no exchange ;))

Also had the intercooler rebuilt ( Rad specialist £30ish)

Cheap fixes for exact prob you have and touch wood runs so much better since.

Make sure you have G12 and not plain water going in mind! The cost of replenishing that stuff is good enough reason to get it done sooner rather than....

Good luck :drive:
