Sounds like lack of fuel (I'm assuming it's diesel)
First step would be to change your fuel filter.

My money would be on a misreading coolant temperature sender, these do not always come up as a fault code.

You could start by having a fault code read, although as Crasher, says the symptoms are that of a faulty temp sensor, and i tend to agree with him.

Not the coolant temperature sender then unless it is a faulty new part which does happen. As Kenny says, you should start with a fault code read although the fuel filter idea reminds me of one I had where a new filter had been fitted and the O rings were distorted.

A fault code read is done with diagnostic equipment, from which you retrieve information (fault codes),stored in the engine control unit

Sometimes a coolant temperature sensor will not come up as a fault even if it is faulty. Either get someone to study the output of the sensor or change it on the off chance that it is faulty with often costs less than trying to diagnose it.
