i have an a4 B6, the temp gauge doesnt always work. it mostly just stays at 50 and wont budge at all. . sometimes i can drive for hours and the needle wont even move. every so often it will jump up to 90 without me noticing. helps reasure that im not overheating tho. ive had it plugged into diagnostics and it doesnt come up with any faults. i no it is just something and nothing, but if any1 has any advice cheers.

also im looking to get it chipped, its done 119000 at the moment but runs absolutely perfect barr the temp problems, those guys at jabba sport any good,

cheers again

you may be better of changing the coolant temperature sensor. its only bout £15 quid from GSF Car Parts. VW AUDI use the same part.

it could be the start of your water pump breaking down.

it wont be a sign of the water pump.. the pump works or it does not.. the engine wont run less than 90'c normally.. .. if the fault was the pump you would know about it..

its a case of working one minute not the next.

It will be the sensor at a guess

I've had the same problem. So I took the car to a local audi specialist. He diagnosed it as the sensor after checking on vag.com. He let me watch him do all the diagnostic checks and explained everything to me.The instrument panel can be checked to ensure the temp gauge is working.
Having the new sensor replace next week.
