Hello all. Very proud owner of a bora pd130 03 plate 50k on clock. Absolutely love it. Serious improvement over my Saab 9-5 which died on me. I still can't believe a td can be so quick and fun to drive!!

Fell in love with it but probably shouldnt have bought it:

50k on clock but only had one service at 23k then an oil change just before I bought it...(I know very foolish) It needs a full service...

It presumably will need the timing belt doing soon. What's the cheapest do you reckon?

The steering wheel judders a bit at 70+ mph. All tyres are at 33psi (is that correct?) Is this normal? Surely not... Tracking?

It's running beautifully but the turbo is making quite a loud whooshing noise when accelerating. Is this normal? You can even hear it with the windows up....

Only got the gamma radio/cassette. Would like a new usb cd tuner that can be controlled by the steering wheel. Any suggestions?

Sorry, quite a few questions!

Cheers

Frank - very proud first time VW owner ( i hope!)

Get it done asap!

Get it done from VW and ur looking at anything from £280 - £550 (£550 is what i got quoted from one VW dealership). If you go to a local garage im sure it will be hell of a lot cheaper than that.

Not sure about this one sorry.

If its a sucking type sound or a whistling sound its normal for a diesel. usually the more u put ur foot dwn the louder it gets. If it doesnt sound normal or is very very loud.. then get it checked out, or im sure some others can help.

To control the tuner via ur steering wheel i believe that u need a wire that links these controls up. Not sure which one but im pretty sure its a lead, which my cousin had done to his.

Most of the questions have been answered, but...

The juddering is most likely caused by wheels that are out of balance. Just get them rebalanced at a tyre dealer, or replaced if close to the limit.

The turbo is supposed to be noisy. If you can't hear it you have a problem. If it hurts your ears you also have a problem.
Mine makes a noise from about 1800RPM and the pitch gradually increases as you accelerate under heavy throttle until it becomes almost so high that you can't hear it anymore. Try driving with the windows down and listening to the turbo, varying your throttle to see how it affects the turbo according to engine load and RPM.

Getting to know the noises your car makes means you can detect potential problems before they get serious.
Get that cambelt changed!

I had this noise when i had the cambelt changed not long ago (cam belt change cost me £150 from local garage, but i think he miss quoted me a little).....anyway, after having it done, the whooshing noise was a hell of a lot louder...took it back to the garage and apparantly one of the pipes carrying air to/from the turbo (i think) wasnt sealed properly. something to do with a dodgy clip. the disruption enhanced the whooshing.....anyway, a new clip later, and the car responds better and the MPG is up...result.
so, i would advise to check for any worn clips or loose pipes rather than leaving it.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Thanks chaps! Guess I'm gonna have to fork out very soon.

Just out of interest on average how many miles are people getting per tank? Judging by my gauge it's looking like 500-600. Bloody delighted!

Typically I get about 500 miles too before I fill up. On a long motorway drive going very steadily while pushing for MPG the computer and odometer combined showed I was on target for over 800!!!! Not long after I left the motorway it dropped of course and ended up over 600.

Ok, So since i had the pipes attched properly, i have only filled the car up once with £43......with this i have jus passed the half way mark at 275miles, so prob on course for between 500-600miles (mostly urban driving) prior to this i was just getting 400-450miles to the tank. I thought this was normal (obviously not) and never bat an eyelid due to me coming from a 3.0 twin turbo (imagine the economy with that).
I have had My Bora 115 PD for over a yr now and have developed my own driving style with it, but i keep reading that there is a 'Way' you should drive them....can anyone shed a light for me as i would like to know what this 'way' is.
Also, I have a tuning box plugged in (not sure what power gain, if any) which came with the car....should i get rid and have a re-map as i also heard that the boxes are not particularly good for the car.
Cheers :beerchug:

on my 115 golf i average around 100 miles to every £10 i put in. i think id probably get around 500 miles from my tank with town driving (im not a slow driver).

without taking this thread too far off topic, tuning boxes as such are ok, as long as they are 'proper' tuning boxes. i fear yours is simply one of those stupid resistor boxes that causes overfuelling, givin the illusion of a faster car, but will do untold damge to your pride and joy.

in reference to the OP your questions seem to have been answered. the whooshing you hear, should as huweth states, not be deafening but should defintleybe audible on throttle. a turbo should whistle, a hissing noise can indicate a boost leak and i would advise to have a look around the braided hoses near the top of the engine bay, these do wear over time and if one of those has a split in it, that could be causing your noise, as well as any intercooler pipes.:beerchug:

That is what i initially thought about the box when the seller mentioned it...but he proved me wrong and showed me a receipt from a Tuning shop in Germany. His Mechanic mate had bought it for him while he was over there.
So, im pretty confident its not one of the Ebay specials.
Still fancying a remap though. see what the 115 (6spd) can do.
