mk3 golf 1st gear issues

Hi i have mk3 golf cabrio, over night i now have probs with getting first gear! I am unable to just push stick forward into 1st as i had done before, i have to push down and half out into reverse to get get it. I hav changed the gear linkages and still the prob is there.
Can anyone help please??
