Hi
My 1996 golf 1.6 100hp has developed a noise in the drive somwehere. I have changed the wheel bearings and the cv joints. I suspect that the problem is either in the gearbox or the diff. It sounds like a bearing with a bad squeak. The noise is worse just as I take up drive. i.e. just as I give a little gas after coasting in gear. the noise is reduced if I give it a bit more torque. If I put the car in neutral the noise goes away. The noise is not there if I jack the front wheels off the ground and run it in gear. Its almost like it needs a little bit of resistance to show itself. This has plauged me for months now and is getting worse. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. :1zhelp:

I have a MK IV myself. 1999 1.6 SE

Sounds like you have gearbox problems. Apparantly its someting to do with the rivets in the diff/gearbox.. They arent strong enough..the diff has to be modified with a nut and bolt kit. Even then its still going to happen again!

Mine has had 2 gearbox's and by the sounds of it the third one will be coming soon...

Get yours checked by a specialist!:biglaugh:

My gearbox is the 02K 5 speed. I am not sure if its the same box in the mk 4. do you know what type of box yours is?

Hi There

My box..:o hehe:p

I'll start again, my GearBox is the dreaded "DUU" gearbox.. different to yours but a week after I bought mine it had the symptoms that you are experiencing.. this advanced to sever juddering when accelerating.:aargh4:
