Flasher unit ticking after indicator off

I have 2002 A6 2.4SE UK car

All of a sudden when I indicate left , after it cancels , there is an irregular "clicking" from behind the centre console , all indicators appear to work normally

Is this the flasher unit ? if so how do you change it

as far as i recall had this happen before and i think i tried the hazzard light switch first but did not cure it and replaced the stalk and all was good again
