I've got a 96 Golf with the 1Y engine. This is the first diesel I've had in my 33 year driving career, and I'm not sure what the noises are coming from the timing belt end of the engine. I can't hear them when driving but they're quite obvious with the engine idling and seem to relate to engine speed. I know it's heard to diagnose noises you haven't heard, but maybe there's a common problem.

Noise 1 is a high pitched squeak. I'm wondering if this might be the water pump, or simply a drive belt. The alternator drive belt is properly adjusted but appears to be a bit on the old side.

Noise 2 is a low pitched noise, a sort of whompa, whompa. No idea what this might be.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sorted, just the ribbed drive belt.
