I have a 97 tdi b4 Passat. When starting the engine there is sort of buzz/whir from behind the clocks and the clock resets to 0.00. At the same time the rev counter and fuel needles take a second or two to register. this does not happen every time but the noise is always there when it does happen ,and the rev counter etc react in the same way.

It happens whether engine is hot or cold. Anyone had similar fault.?

I unwittingly caused a similar condition when I 'borrowed' the fuse for the instruments' memory on my '98 B5.
In your case I suspect there is an intermittent open circuit condition, causing the buzzing/arcing, and is likely to be on the track involved with the instrument memory. If you remove the instruments and check the connector plug terminals are clean and secure as a starting point that could fix it. If not you may need to open the instruments up to check for a crack or dry joints in the circuit board.
