Have a 1999 V reg Golf TDi 110 hp I am changing the cylinder head due to damage.
My question is where is the injection pump timing hole?
Have bought the camshaft locking tool but cannot see the injection pump timing hole it is either very small or you have to take the cog off which will loose the timing!!
There are three slotted bolts on the pump.
Help!!

It must be possible to tell where the injection pump should be timed how do you do it if the cam belt breaks? or how do they do it at the factory?

I haven't time an injection pump, but i was readin somewheer, i wish i could remember, that to time the pump in properly you need a pump dial gauge. this basically tell you where the pump timing is. in not the same as locking it. as the timing on the gear is already set at the correct point.

This may be twadle, or at best slighty inaccurate but it should give you a few words to seacrh on at least.

(I think I going to ask my resident expert, my dads a (retired) mechanic;) )

Sorted it myself !!
If you remove the injection pump cog/pulley there is a u shaped cut out on the pump flange and a hole on the injection pump casing which lines up at about 2 o'clock.
Mine was about 4 teeth out so now its all mechanically timed I have a good starting point.

the u shape slot is called a woodruff key. I always thought there was a mark on the gog that indicated where it was:confused:

No the slot is like one of the bolt thread holes but its been elongated to the edge of the pump flange.
I could not see any markings on the cog other than some previous red marks presumably from a previous cambelt change.
I always thought a woodruff key usually has a notch in the cog centre and a raised tab in the corresponding shaft.
It must be correct as the car starts and runs ok.

ok I get it now, thanks for the info and glad the car running as well.
