It's a TDI 1Z engine. But when I use the starter motor, even though it cranks the engine at 300rpm it takes about 30 seconds to start. It starts a little easier when it's hot (about 15 seconds) but even 15 secs is a long crank. I've trawled through the forums on here and changed the fuel filter, checked for bubbles in the fuel line, checked for 12V at the glow plugs, checked for chaffed wiring and air leaks. What's the difference between a start cycle using the starter and the start cycle when bumping? It seems to fire into life on the first turn of the crankshaft when I bump it! Does anyone have any ideas before I take it to a diesel specialist? Thanks in anticipation.

you might have 12v at the heater plugs but you need to check the current they are drawing if they are burnt out you will still have 12v at the plugs you need to put an amp meter on the main supply wire there should be a draw of approx 60 to 80 amps any less than 60 and some of the plugs arent working

Thanks Vagman but how would that effect the fact that it starts ok with a bump and the fact that it's not much better when the engine is hot. That's what's confusing the hell out of me!

Have the ECU recoded as for an automatic and then test start it. If it fires up faster then your starter motor is probably full of debris from a failing dual mass flywheel and is not cranking fast enough to initiate fuelling start, there is a bit of a “hole” in the fuelling curve at the bottom of the map.

Well after 206,000 miles I wouldn't be surprised if the flywheel has finally given up but the starter does crank it at 300rpm..........faster than when I bump start it. I'll bear your advice in mind if and when I get it to a specialist.

It could be the wire from the starter motor to the battery/starter. we had the same problem and the wire was broken in the middle. the wire on our one is kind of blue-ish

The starter motor solenoid wire is a thick red/black, the thin blue wire is for the alternator warning light.

Thanks Kevin and Crasher. I'm been working away at the moment and it'll be a while before I can take another look at it. Kevin, with this wire from the battery/starter broken did your engine still crank over ok? You could really help me a whole lot if you did have the same problem!

Well I had to use a jump starter to get the car to start. the car would start ok when it was kinda hot. the wire was a bit dry and broken (what else do you expect from a 14yr old car?). So i'd suggest you try changing that. Hope it helps.
