Having just fitted new pads and discs, the haynes manuel says make sure that the pad retaining spring (about 5" long with loop at each end, fits two holes on the caliper) should be in firm contact with the pad...
is this correct,

there is no evidence of it having touched the old pads, and it will need slight bending to touch the back of the new pads.

It seems more suitable that it pulls the floating caliper towards the mounting block without touching the pad...

does it make much difference?

thanks in advance,

Paul

Pad retaining springs tend to get bent and twisted a bit out of shape when they are removed. It should be touching the pad with some pressure. It is not the end of the world if it is not, but bending it a touch to get it where it needs to be won't hurt anything.

Aye, often get slightly out of shape when removing so just bend it back a little and refit. Shouldn't have any trouble now.
