Get a fault scan

Have you had a fault code read done? Bear in mind that you WILL now have an Air Mass Meter fault code stored so you will now not know if it was actually a fault or not.

get it scanned for fault codes, but ignore the one for the maf, as you have produced this by disconnecting it. check them, note them down, erase, test drive then recheck them.

Thanks guys, where is the best place to go to get faults scanned ?? Or should I buy a fault code reader ?? I'm down in deepest darkest Sussex....

Look in the vagcom section of this forum for a member in your area,..

Normally a decent garage will do it for £30 or thereabouts - it's always best to get the codes checked before doing anything and avoid those tempting ebay parts.

Hope everything gets sorted for you soon and best wishes

Chris

Sorry to butt in, but apart from the poor performance, are there any other ways of recognising a dodgy maf? I know they can gradually go over time, so was just wondering?

If they do not generate a fault code (more often than not they don’t) then it is a seat of the pants feeling, for me “no codes, no power, new AMM” is my rule. You can literally spend hours agonising over measuring block data getting all **** about curves, peaks, troughs and flow numbers but if you are doing it for a living, you do not have the luxury of being able to spend six hours going blind staring at data blocks and graphs, you have to move fast. A new genuine exchange AMM costs about the same as an hour and a half’s labour and my rule serves me well being accurate in about 80% of cases.

Good point, thanks. I'm not sure if mine's down on power. May be time to get one.

sorry for the thread hijack, but does a maffhave to be adapted to the ecu if a new one is fitted?
Ive read that you do and ive also read that you dont. I dont need to change mine, im just curious

cheers

Do but it MAY help if there is a fault code stored to have it deleted.

As above, some say yes, some say no. I was told once to disconnect the battery for 20min, then idle the car for 20min for the ECU to learn the new idle values with the different MAF. Personally, I just plugged it in and drove it!
