hey. i want to change my cambelt, as its due.

i have a 1996 audi a4 1.9 tdi (AFN)

there are two other belts needing to be replaced as well.. may as well do them all at the same time.

i take it one is the alternator belt? (is this also known as the aux drive belt??)

is the other belt the timing belt?

does anyone have any links to buying these belts? thanks..

I've just done the belt on my 1.8 T sport. It had 4 belts- cam belt, aux(fan) belt, PAS pump belt and a belt for the air con pump. I only changed the cambelt as all the others looked fine. The PAS and air con very seldom snap, you may aswel do the aux belt whilst your in there as theyre only cheap I suppose.

i'm just trying to work out what the belts are on the AFN 1.9 tdi engine :(

i know the one behind the cover is the cambelt.
the one on the alternator is the aux belt..

but theres another one at the bottom, and i dont know what that belt is?

I think all you need to ask for is a Cam belt kit.

My brother in law did mine last year and stated the above whenever talking about it.

when looking on the eurocarparts website, i've found a timing belt kit, that comes with new pulleys... and an auxillery belt. but its all a bit confusing, and dont want to end up buying parts i dont need

the two other belts are one is for the water pump to the power steering and the other on is the air con belt
best from german and swedish or euro car parts

so timing belt kit and aux drive belt should be okay?
i cant find an air con belt listed?

thanks,

Yep just get the cambelt kit, and an aux belt if you want. Probly is best to change it seeing as it has to come off anyway. Do you know how to do the cambelt?

put a new water pump belt on as well

is that the one on the bottom? on the same pulley at the alternator belt?

i'm just slgihtly confused because people call the belts by different names, and makes it hard to find them when searching :(

Hello as you look at the engine on thr right is your power steering pump with two belts one on the back is the alternator belt (the big long one) and the next belt is the water pump belt you have to undo the 3 allen bolts witch holds on the pully, if you look at your pitcher its the one two the right lower, if you phone gfs http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ they will sort you out.

that is fantastic! :) thanks for the helping..

but today. sad news, my alternator belt snapped this morning :( and took the water pump belt with it! oops :( engine still runs so its a good sign. in the garage now getting new belts (including cambelt) brake discs and pads all round, rear suspension knocking sorted, and new thermostat and housing! a lot of work done, but it needs to be done for the MOT in march. couple of days off work as well.. just what the doctor ordered :)

i would love to do it myself, but dont want to risk putting the belt on wrong, or the pulleys/tensioners.. so its at a garage.

brakes, suspension and minor engine work i dont mind doing myself.
used to have a seat ibiza cupra 1.8 20vt before this, and loved working on the engine, replacing alot of major components and learning as i went.
but dont want to jump in too fast with this engine

oooooooooooooo you've missed out there!! The cambelt on these is so easy to do!! Dispite being a fully trained mechanic this was the first one I've ever done (went to college, havn't got into the trade etc) I was so proud of myself!!Once you get the front of the car off,its all just sat infront of you, I didnt use any of the special tools of anything fancy like that, just a regular socket set and a set of torques bits!

Strip the front pannel off, wich holds the radiator etc

Take off the other belts, crankshaft pulley and the cambelt cover and its just sat there, same as any other belt really.
