TOUraN COOLANT LEVEL!!

I am not too sure about the coolant level.... reading the book i have with it and it says not to let it go down past the min mark... i dont... but it does seem quite low.. i have a tdi goilf mk4 and i never had to really fill it with coolant ...i.e water from the tap!... maybe only twice/ three times a year. it sits at mid way!

is the coolant test on a touran a big job as i am scred the head gasket mught be going etc.. although the oil cap is fine etc and it just had a VW service on the 10/11/09...
