1996 a6 2.5 tdi aat engine
very noisy sounds like bearings have gone would this make a tapping sound or is that something else
ps its not getting warm at all

Yes the fan pulley has a bearing in it. Describe the speed of the tapping noise and when it happens. An electric fan will not help you as the pulley is required due to the lenght of the aux belt. The temp could be due to stat stuck open. Regards Peter

thanks peter.. the tapping gets worse as it warms up... its a metalic sounding tap but yesterday it totaly disapeared so i took it out for a run and it returned at around 2500 rpm with noticable power loss and remained that way for the rest of the journey...
ps black smoke bellowing from exhaust at around the 2500 rpm mark but no smoke when its not tapping..
after yesterday i am leaning towards injector sticking or locking does that make sense bud...

pps its covered 155000 miles and oil changed by my self every 5000 without fail

This is a distributor deisel engine so I doubt it is a sticking injector. I would pop to deisel specialist and get it checked out. Is the tapping is coming from the front left, as you look at irt then I suspect the EGR valve is sticking thus the smoke and the power loss. Regards Peter

fan was changed out and now its super quiet..cost a ton at local vw indipendant... did a superb job for me...
the tapping noise was a sticking injector due to the use of bio fuel...run her on esso mostly now and all is well...just passed smoke test with a reading of 1.20 very pleased with the old girl...
