I viewed a passat estate yesterday and only realised after the test drive it was a 110bhp and not a 140(as i currently have) Will this make much difference when towing my van,mtplm=1409kgs,bearing in mind we are 2 adults,a 15yr old lad and twin girls of 12 plus a large dog in the car when we go away with the van!.

Any advice,comments,etc welcome.

Thanks.

Its 25% less power. Pull-away time will be an extra 25%. Up hill will be 25% harder. Driving will be 25% more stress-full. If you need big, get big.

Rubbish.

Whilst on paper it might be 25% less you will find the 1.9's are much much better tow vehicles than the 2.0's as they are 8valve engines, this means they have considerably more grunt and more diesel like attributes.

The 2.0's are pretty gutless until the turbo kicks in, and pulling away at 2500-3000 rpm is a recipe for wheel spin and burnt clutches.

My personal preference would be the 130bhp 1.9tdi, its super to drive and tow with. The 110 is also very good. I prefer both of them over my current 2.0 140bhp, the only bonus is i now have 4wd and a 2200kg tow limit :)

well said, torque is as, if not more important the BHP for towing. The newer common rails (or whatever they are called) aren't supposed to be so torquey..

The 1.9 is 105bhp but has now been discontinued. The 1.9 130 hasn't been used for years.

Both the 110 and 140 (and 170) on the new Passat are 2.0 CR Diesels.

The torque delivery on the CR engine is more linear so you don't get the kick in the back but maximum torque is still available from 1750 rpm.

I tow 1460kg behind a 140CR and it's fine, I find the torque delivery aids traction off the line too. My old 130 had a tendancy to spin the wheels in the wet with the van on the back

Cheers

I tow with a 105 passat, my van is 1400kg and have a similar family to you. The car tow well, it will never win races but is stable, relaxed and alot better than the vectra used to be even though it has a considerable amount of horses less. Oh and no injector or oil pump drive probs. Solo on a gentle run I can get nearly 60mpg. Unless you are a boy racer or need the bigger tow wieght this is a good car.
