Golf v6 4motion 1st and 2nd gear not selecting

Recently purchased a Golf v6 4 motion and all has been fine up until tonight where I have lost 1st and 2nd gear. Basically they do go in but have no drive what so ever, rest of the gears are fine. Theres not crunching or anything. You can now turn the engine on engage the car into 1st/2nd gear without clutch and it does nothing. I looked at the gearbox end in the engine and there is movement when selecting 1st and 2nd but you dont hear no click, just free motion.
Can someone advise on what It might be?

Are the clips on the selector cables intact? I've heard they can break, leading to these symptoms.

Hello did you sort the problem out as my 2002 tdi 150 has done exactly the same today all linkages look fine cables moving i can get reverse 3,4,5,6. any help would be great thanks.
