I have a problem at the moment the fan belt came off the over day so the power steering wouldn't work and the battery light came on. so i took it the the garage and they said that it needs a new fan belt tensioner the tensioner holding and the bar that goes though as this had bent. Is this right what they are saying i got told it is going to cost me £312 to get it fixed. Anyone out there that can fill me in and let me know if what they are saying is right.

That does happen but I would have expected the problem to be the freewheel on the alternator. That siezes and throws off the belt.

Thanks i was asking because i can;t find anything on the net that says there is a passat fan belt tensioner holding tray

If you look you should see a sort of bracket with the tension roller at one end and the damper at the other end. The bracket pivots to tension the belt. VW call this bracket "holder". The roller should be 059 145 276 and cost £40. The holder should be 059 145 283A and cost £25 and the Damper should be 059 145 284B and cost £98. It's all bolted together so I don't know what the garage mean by "bar"

this tensioner bolt can break, the bolt sheared on mine resulting in the bolt becoming lodged in the bottom pully and made quiet a mess, new roller, bolts, sleaves,belt and a new bottom pulley cost near £200 lucky it happened outside my house on start up
