Hi all,

Just bought an 2002 A4 1.9 TDI Sport 130 with 60k on the clock. I have been told that it is due a cambelt change about now, Is this correct?

If so what sort of costs am i looking at and would you recommend a main dealer, or other garage to carry out the work.

Sorry if this has been asked before but i am new here!!:beerchug:

Thanks, Eds.

Hi eds i have an Audi 1.9 TDi 130 its best to get the cambelt done around 60k just had mine done at a private garage cost £350 but got a quote from main deeler for £450. So went for the cheper option and crossed my fingers they should also change the tentioner as well as cambelt and get they also might have to re-set the air bag system if the airbag waring light stays on after they have finnished (like mine did).
Hope this helps

I paid £350 at the main dealer for my 2004 TDI Passat.

This included the tensioner and the water pump.

Apparently it isn't a bad idea to get the water pump done at the same time.

To get only the belt and tensioner done it would have cost £275

Hope this helps
P-P

PS - The main dealer costs did vary enormously, so shop around..!

I Paid 275 at Main dealer for parts and labour for belt and tensioner. I haggled a lot. Get a quote from 2 or 3 and play one off against the other.

Cam belts are one of their favourite jobs and they normally make 3-4 hrs labour charge on each one so they can easilly afford to do one cheaper. Especially if they have a quiet few days and need to get the hours up.

These £500 + prices are just too high in my opinion. Must be due to £100+ hourly labour rates. I think that genuine parts cost roughtly £100 retail and they come in a kit form.

Had mine done @ the VW garage. Although owned by the same company as the local Audi it was £100 cheaper

Just got 2 quotes from Independant Audi dealers for cambelt, tensioner and waterpump of £327 and £347 inc parts labour and vat. Not bad i thought.
The Audi main *********** never bothered calling me back. But i expect that they would be a lot dearer!!

I would give them a call and see if they will beat the price. I used to work in the service dept of a Main dealers and if we were struggling to get enough work in for the week we would always be open to haggling for services and cam belts. Tell them you have been quoted £325 and ask if they will do it for £300. They might say yes in the hope that while the car is in they can sell you some brakes, a brake fluid service or some wipers or something at full price.

It's worth a go!
