Hi not sure how to use this forum yet....:o But I thought someone might be able to help. Got a Golf PD TDI 115 which started to make a knocking noise. Various garages including VAG could not say what it was. White smoke when starting from cold. :1zhelp:

Can you give more details as to specific location of noise and under what circumstances the noise is heard?

Hi Fettler, Noise is there from startup accompanied by the clouds of white smoke. The smoke goes when engine warmed up. The noise is a dull knocking sound which is diffucult to locate but seems to come from inside the engine. Doesn't seem to get any louder above 1500 rpm, but I haven't pushed it above 2000. The tickover is very lumpy and when driving feels like a bad plug would be in a petrol engine. THe camshaft looks fine ( was suggested that this was the fault ) the latest prognosis is that it is a big end and the noise is the piston hitting the underside of the head. I am currently looking at a replacement engine. Loads of money.....Thanks for your help
