:confused:
I have recently bought an 03 reg Passat W8 4.0, a day after collecting the car I realised the nearside rear footwell was soaking wet under the carpet – I took it back to the car supermarket I got it from and they tried to tell me it was where they cleaned the carpet!

I’ve now established it’s the pollen filter. VW say it needs sealing (at a cost of £250) but when I was fitting a new battery last week I noticed there was no cover on the pollen filter at all, does anybody know if there should be a cover on the filter? Should it just be sitting there with nothing over it or should it be in a box? It looks like it should be covered with something (other than the big plastic cover in front of the wipers). I’m thinking that there is something missing and it’s just raining in through the filter, hopefully not needing sealing?

I’m taking the car back to where I got it next week, they reckon they’ll fix it but I don’t trust them.

Thanks

Giles.

Pretty sure the filter is just sat there under the scuttle cover.Mine had to have this done prior to me buying it. VW charged the previous owner 318.62!!!! so hope you get the dealer to pay for it.

Edited post - I'm an idiot!

Back to my point - do you have the cover that runs the width of the car, covering the ECU, battery and pollen filter?

Taken from www.passatplus.de

You should have the above covers already.

Then under the cover should be, in order;

Pollen filter
Pollen filter housing
Seal - for which ETOS says there is no replacement part
Gasket (intake manifold)
And then a plastic duct (the air distri. housing)

You can replace these parts yourself - if you need to, butyl rubber can be used to replace the seal.

It may not be this that is the problem, you could have done this already but before jumping in why not quickly check the following;

Drain tubes- this post shows the sunroof drain holes (if you have one) - http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=837

Drain plugs - this one shows the engine bay drain plugs - http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=1447&postcount=4

Good luck
