hi there i have an 05 tdi touran 1.9 and during the recent cold snap my wipers failed to work as they were iced up i tried looking for the fuse but the layout in the manual is completley different to whats under the bonnet so checked the sockets at the wiper motors (i have two driver side and passenger side) both getting 12 volts so not a fuse. This indicates the motors but which one???? also on the stalk when i choose which setting for the wiper speed there used to be a clicking noise and there still is when i operate the rear wiper and both front and rear washers but not the front wipers so was wondering if it was a relay or stalk problem dont wanna get a new motor and it be something else as i've read wiper motors are upto £300 fitted (ouch!!) Any help or suggestions would be a great help.

ps.. read somewhere that if 1 motor goes one wiper will still work and if the other motor has gone neither wiper will work but cant remember which one....cheers and Happy New Year

Simon

Did you get this sorted ? Mine have failed too. N/S one worked then stopped halfway up. Both do nowt now. All fuses ok, the o/s arm itself is solid, the n/s one can be moved albeit against a resistance by hand through the full stroke... Any ideas ?

Similar problem too. Drivers side works but passenger not. I can get it to work but it just crashes into the other one. Mechanic friend thinks the controller needs resetting. Looking closely to see how you get on. Cheers

Mine is in at the ******* today for another reason (heated front seat catching fire) so will update. Mate of mine reckons it's probably a controlller issue too as they work on a Can Bus system. A plug-in diagnostic jobbie...

After 4 days the diagnosis from the ******* is 1 or both wiper motors defective. Why they can't definitively say 1 or the other is beyond me ? Surely the fault codes will show up in the ECM ? Outcome is best part of £400. Apparently you have to buy 2 motors and linkages as an assembly !!! Still don't believe 'em personally. Will be asking for old parts back methinks...

Can anyone tell me if I'm being had ?

just got back from local garage and he also suspects wiper control box and recommended VW look at it, with my wipers they are completly dead. but with you guys who have 1 working and 1 not suggests 1 motor gone with the touran you have 2 motors 1 master motor for 1 motor and a slave motor for the other and from what i've learnt your slave motor has gone if the master motor had gone neither motor would work also bloke at my garage says he can buy motors individually as for me its an expensive trip to VW:aargh4:

PS a mechanic friend of mine has the VW diag software and when he plugged my car in not one fault appeared.... ??? Surely a faulty wipercontrol box would show up!

Hi
We are Lochcarron Garage on the West coast of Scotland we have just had a car in with the same problem.

There are fuses under the bonnet and under the dashboard.

We also had trouble diagnosing the problem as no fault comes up on the diagnostics.

We managed to fix it by disconnecting the battery for 1 minutes and then reconecting and roadtesting. This seems to have reset the program.

This worked for us but may not for you. :biglaugh:

Took it to an independent vw place and he reckons i need a new wiper arm as the one that is not working properly looks as if it has been worn by the spindle (soft aluminium arm and harder spindle) when it was frozen stuck. Sounds plausible I suppose, so we have to order one and do it later this week. I let you know of any success, or let me know if you've tried this.

Just tested this theory by wrapping some aluminium foil on spindle before refitting blade arm and ........ it's working normally again! Problem sorted!

No need to reset the diagnostics or do the battery trick.

A reminder of my initial problem; passenger side wiper froze and when thawed would clatter into working drivers side wiper. When loosened and refitted it would work briefly then clatter into the other one again. Now both working fine and I'll get that new arm on soon as I don't suppose the tinfoil solution will be permanent.

Touran can see in the rain yeehaa cost £320 Faulty controller unit on the master motor(passenger side) caused by chaffed data wire spiking the controller unit with 7 to 12 volts instead of 0-5v had to get it on an oscillator to identify it had the car 2 and a half days ran 3 diag. and bout 8 man hrs so im happy as the controllers are £130 to buy each on the downside tho asked him to check squealing noise when i let off accelerator and he thinks it could be turbo as it is a bit noisy and whistley aswell BUMMA he says to just keep an eye on it for now tho so better start saving LOL

My turbo blew at 57k last year just two months out of warrranty; cost a bit more than my wiper arm to fix but that's another story. Hope yours gives you many more miles. look after it nicely.
