Here is a question for all you guys with your fingers on the pulse. I read that the new A8 is getting an updated 3.0TDI with about 245bhp and around 412lb/ft of torque thingies. As I am still weighing up whether to get a 3.0TDi A4 or not, does anyone know if there is a date when the A4 will get this engine? I assume it will as it is more efficient and has lower emissions. I would hate to order one and find out that a few weeks later this rather more impressive engine was available.

I'm also interested in whether this is a significantly different engine from the one already in the A4, or if it's just been tweaked a bit. I rather suspect it will be the same as the version in the Q7 which appears to have been retuned for higher headline torque at the cost of rev range (550Nm from 2000-2250rpm vs. 500Nm from 1500-3000rpm in the A4).

Either way, you should go for it - it's a lovely engine with plenty of go and (now it's loosened up) mine consistently does 40-ish to the gallon.

I do not see the A4 getting this engine in 2010 maybe Model year change in 2011 which will be around May.

CO2 Emissions on the 3.0TDI A8 are 154g/km which is very impressive from a tax point of view almost as good as a B8 2.0TDI quattro which is 149g/km

It would be great if that were true, because the figure for the A4 with that engine would be stunning, but I just can't see it. The figure I've seen bandied around in the US for the new A8 3.0TDI is 38mpg highway, which is about 46mpg UK and probably equates to around 48-50mpg on the UK extra-urban cycle.

Looking at the current A4 models, that would give ~180-190g/km, which is pretty impressive for a car that big, especially considering that the current model is 224.

Well the BMW 330d has 245 bhp and 380 + torques, as well as being all aluminium and other clever thingies. The newer version in the 530D seems to have more torques still, so surely Audi wouldn’t want to be caught napping. I think the Mercedes 3.0tdi produces lots of torque jobbies too.

The BMW 3-Series is not all Aluminium??? Or are you talking about the Engine?

The only 2 All Aluminium cars are the XJ and Audi A8

P.S.

6 cylinder engines form BMW are amazing

Sorry, I assumed as I was on about engines that it would be inferred that I was talking about the engines. Yes the BMW 330D is all alloy, but the X1 isn’t the only BMW (apart from the 330D) that has an alloy engine as it has the all alloy engine that is fitted to my 123D. There is talk of the engine going into the next gen 3 series and even possibly the Mini (if they can get it to fit sideways).

I agree about the BMW straight 6 engines, they are lovely, but I liked the growl from the Audi V6 too :)

I
CO2 Emissions on the 3.0TDI A8 are 154g/km which is very impressive from a tax point of view almost as good as a B8 2.0TDI quattro which is 149g/km

Just to clarify, the 149g/km is for the 200bhp version as per Audi press release (http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Audi_News/article_5478.shtml). The 250bhp 3.0TDI is 174g. Nevertheless emissions on the new A8 are VERY impressive the 4.2TDI put out only 199g/km, outstanding for 350bph/800nm, autobox and quattro!

The two V8 engines are to be joined by a six-cylinder version shortly after
the market launch – the 3.0 TDI has also been thoroughly overhauled. It mobilizes 184 kW (250 hp) from its 2,967 cm3 displacement and draws 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) onto the crankshaft at 1,500 to 3,000 rpm – 13 kW (17 hp) and 100 Nm (73.76 lb-ft) more than previously.

The V6 diesel brings the A8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.6 seconds. On the average it needs only 6.6 liters of fuel per 100 km (35.64 US mpg) – an improvement of 1.9 liters/100 km or 22 percent. Per kilometer it emits merely 174 g CO2 (280.03 g/mile). The standard 3.0 TDI operates with a start-stop system. It switches off the engine when the A8 comes to a standstill, and restarts the engine as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the brake.

At a later point in time Audi will add a second variant of the V6 TDI with
150 kW (204 hp). Driving exclusively the front wheels, its efficiency is exemplary. In the EU driving cycle the new engine needs only 6.0 liters/100 km (39.20 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 159 g/km (255.89 g/mile).

 I compared the A4 (B8) 170PS quattro at 149g/km as in my post?

yep, but the 154g you quoted is not for the normal A8 3.0TDI 250bhp, it is for the "light" flavour, 200bhp, front wheel drive. Still very good but since the OP was asking about the 3.0TDI 245hp, thought it as worth clarifying

So instead of saving up for the new engine if it ever comes, I should spend the money on shoes and boots then :biglaugh:

Actually one thing I didn't like about the A4 S-line is the seats, as they are awfully broad across the back and I rattle around a bit in them, but it wouldbn't put me off one.
