Hi everyone,

Looking at buying a 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi Tiptronic. Can anyone tell me if this is car worth buying and is the tiptronic any good?

Cheers,

K

It's an imposible question. It might be a bag of dog food, or might be a great car. A good inspection helps. In general they are a good bet and the cars are a good drive.

The 1.9 tdi 105 dsg is a little underpowered but the 2.0 tdi 140 dsg is a far better buy, but as greg says - get it checked first.

A manual gearbox is invariably more reliable than an auto.

Hi,

Generally, but not Invariably. For instance the 02K is shot regular as clockwork sub 100k. But a TH400 GM auto is practically bulletproof. But an 01M Golf/Octy auto is not as reliable as the 02J.

Traditional big autos are typically more reliable than manuals (the SDi and Jag both had a lot of trouble with their manuals, but the autos were very durable on the whole) but modern small autos have not been so good.

The ZF 5 speed auto's don't seem too bad, the DSG can have the odd problem but isn't a bad bit of kit at all.

Greg.
