Hello,

My 2.0 TDI runs well, today I started it up for the fourth time and it fired before I'd turned the key to start, it was only in the 'on' postion. I have tried several times since and everytime it does this.

I think it is probably the solenoid but am hoping there is a relay somewhere!?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I think it is either the electrical part of the ignition switch or there is a fault with the wiring (ignition contact 15 and starter solenoid contact 50,)it is not the solenoid, and there is no relay

Thanks, I see I only have one relay in the engine compartment, unlike the four the service manual shows!

In that case you do have a relay, positioned in slot A2 in the engine compartment fuse box Terminal 50 voltage supply relay -J682-marked (433)

In the engine bay I only have one relay, it is marked with '100' then in smaller writing '++05472 2 B' There is another position for a relay but this has a link across it only. It bears little ressemblance to the diagram in the book!

I am looking in the compartment next to the battery on the near side. Is there another compartment somewhere?

While I had the relay removed I tried to start the engine, it turns over in the 'on postion' as before but does not fire!

There are 2 different types of electronic fuse boxes E-box low and E-box high,so the positioning of relays varies.PM your e-mail address and i will send you the diagrams. The wiring diagrams of later vehicles are a pain in the butt, and very difficult to understand. As an example, the traditional 50 wire, which ran from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid is no more. Now,the ignition switch contact (50) runs first to the control unit for steering column electronics,so to the onboard supply control unit,so to the relay for voltage supply of terminal 50and finally to the starter solenoid.
