Bike Transportatoin on a Scirocco

I have just purchased a New Scirocco to replace the Skoda and need to transport my mountain bike, I know a roof rack is available which is my method of choice but my biggest concern is scratching the car at the contact points whilst fitting! Are the feet of the roof rack well protected to avoid scratching? Also where is the best place to buy one? VW are after £200+ for theirs which seems alot, I could almost by a banger for that to transport them!

Any advice appreciated and any alternative methods minimising the chance of damage.

From what I gather you can't get a tow bar for the New Scirocco.....Have looked into that option previously.
