Sounds like the fan to me if yr getting hot air in the cabin. If the water pump was gone u wouldnt have hot air inside for very long. Let the car warm up and listen for the fan to kick in. Dont let it get to hot.

Turn the aircon off to stop the fan, run the engine at fast idle to get some heat into it...

If its a diesel you shouldnt just let it run on the drive to warm up. It should be started and driven (according to VW). Once up to temp it can be left running on the drive.

had car ticking over for about six months now or a couple of hours and temp sittin at 90 seems to only do it while driving would it be anything to do with very cold weather

If it only does it when you drive I would say the water pump has failed. Heat is circulating on it's own when ticking over but when you drive this isn't enough and the water pump has lost it's push. It's fairly common, especially on the plastic vane pumps.

No way to know for sure. An internally collapsed hose or a partially blocked radiator would produce similar results. The water pump is a well known problem though. You could try feeling the radiator to see if it gets hot evenly all over. Good luck.

I've lost track. Have you changed the thermostat yet. That might be stuck mostly shut.

Looks like you are running out of options. Only hoses and radiator left. Can you get someone to shine an Infra Red thermometer onto the radiator to see if it is heating up evenly.
