Tailgate doesn't lock (1.8T sport estate)

Hi there, tailgate will not lock on keyfob or key. It isn't the microswitch, as the boot knows when it is shut/open (lights come on) but whenever you use the handle on the boot the door opens..
Anyone any idea? Great forum by the way.
2000 (W) 1.8T with 165,000 on the clock, otherwise immaculate.

Just thought I would follow up the thread with the solution - turns out the
solenoid in the tailgate had failed - a grand total of £15 for a new one from a local garage.
