Hi
Just bought a 2002 (52) Passat 2.0 130 SE petrol. Does anyone know when the cambelt etc should be changed?

Thanks

Hi,
I THINK the 2.0 16V Passat cam belts are good for 100k miles - 20v 1.8 is quoted as replacement at 80k miles. Hope this helps.

I was going to create a new post but I'll hijack this if that's OK.

Does anyone know what the going rate is for a cambelt change on a 1.8T Passat (1998, APU engine). I have rung around some dealers but want to get other people's views. The job would be done by VW dealer, include water pump and both (does it have two?) tensioners and a courtesy car for the duration. How much?

Hi,
I had the cambelt & tensioner replaced on my 1998 20v (non-turbo though assume they are essentially the same) late last year - my local dealer (Listers VW) quoted circa £600 and a local independent VW specialist quoted £320. None of these quotes included the waterpump belt or tensioner (yes they do have two) as these had already been replace under warranty. A mechanic friend of mine completed the job for £218 - the biggest cost being the cambelt tensioner at £135+vat!
The job is quite labour intensive as virtually the whole front end of the car needs to be removed (bumper, front grill + possibly radiator) - this is the biggest reason for the main dealer extortionate prices as they will charge over £60 per hour for the mechanic's time.
I can not really advise on a total cost of what you wish to do, however I can say you will save a fortune by using a reputable independent garage. Hope this helps?????

I had my cambelt and tensioner done on my 1.8T Golf by a VW specialist(excluding water pump) in Bedford and they charged £220.00 all in.

I changed the timing belt on my A4 1.8T (1998) myself, i changed it at 70000 miles. I also changed the cambelt tensioner and idle roller, tho i didn't change the water pump as it doesn't run off the timing belt and is fairly easy to change. I did replace the pump belt and the serpentine belt and tensioner tho. I got the belts and tensioner/roller from euro car parts online...the tensioner was actually a genuine audi part that someone had tried (unsucessfully) to remove the VAG symbols.....it cost me £23 plus vat and delivery. I did the whole job for well under £100 and removing the front end of the car isn't actually that hard to do...VW/Audi actually only move the front end forward on extension bolts to do the job.....

Dear Dr T

If you dont mind a little journey to Somercotes in Derbyshire there is a top place called John Sherwin who specialises in VW. I had my previous Passat's cam belt, tensioners ond aircon and alt belt changed for about £320. Not a bad price for peace of mind and did a spectacular job as well. I will be taking my Tdi there when she is due. Hope this is helpful. Ta Ta
