Hi,
I am just recovering from the trauma of some major refurbishment on my 94 Avant 80 TDI. (Had this car since new and rather attached to it).
After paying £350 to a group of monkeys to get some suspension mounts (and a shock and spring which they broke) changed on front, I had to pay £900 to my local Audi ******* to correct the problems and completely redo the job properly. Including fitting new shocks and a new track rod.
Having done the brakes and disks myself, and renewed the sunroof cables, and fixed a whole host of tiny things, I figured I was just getting to end of this 150k miles refit!
When I picked the car up at the dealer last friday, a note also pointed out that the clutch thrust bearing was very noisy, which I can indeed hear now, with the door open.
Clutch works fine and the noise is not a scream or anything dramatic. It is the original clutch, so I guess I cant complain after 150k.
I now have to decide whether to go to Mr clutch and get the clutch replaced for a rather reasonable £225 (should really be about the last thing on the list and I have already spent about £2k this month!). Or, put it off until the bearing deteriorates further. (Not really planning to take the local ******* up on the offer of £750 to replace the clutch).
Thing is, I am heading down to Switzerland for a month trip, and want to balance the risk of having the clutch fail during this trip, against the risk of setting out immediately after a major operation such as a clutch refit (I am just paranoid about taking the car into a garage these days!), when I am confident that everything else at last is now hunky dory.
Any body have any horror stories about clutch replacements, Mr clutch, or anything else relevant?
Cheers,
Timk
