Switch on the re-circulate function and redo the test, I've also had it, was merely the wind forcinging in via the vents. I normaly have the auto recirculate function on so it is not always there..

is this by any chance the sound of your turbo that you are hearing?

Thanks both for your reply i thought it might be the turbo as well but because this is my first audi tdi just wanted to ask the question. If it is the turbo it has only just started to work and seems very noisy. Going to have a dig around the engine on my day off wish me luck.

Pop the bonnet with the engine running, rev the engine hard, if you cant hear the turbo spin up then you've got a problem with the turbine blade i'd hazard a guess. May just be jammed, if its disintergrated then you'd of heard bits going through the exhaust! Surprised your not getting an ECU warning light though? If you can hear the turbo in the above test give it a high speed motorway run (as in 70mph of course!) to blow out any cobwebs. If you cant hear the turbo, get it to the garage! I get the wind noise on my V6 and the recirculation button works by the way!

Thganks for the reply. the problem was getting worse so i disconnected the MAF sensor and removed the air filter gave it all a dam good clean and touch wood the care is driving better than ever. But will take it for a high speed run at 70mph over the week end and see how we get on (Fingers crossed)

sorry to sound like a total thicko but what is the MAF sensor ?? and where is it located

Mass air flow or MAF, it senses the air going into the turbo so the ecu can control the amount of boost. Its located after the air filter and has a connctor in it.

Hi hendy as the post above explains about the MAF i wont harp on about it. Not sure where it is located on the passat's? but will be after the main air filter as the picture shows. might be worth changing your air filter as well mate

you need to get the fault codes read, it could be the maf (doesn't allways log a code) or it could be overboot. I had this problem and the accelerated well but when you use more thrittle the car just drop revs like mad, felt like i was crawling up hill.

I knew what was wrong due to a pipe being broken on the pressure converter which controls the turbo, it logged a overboost code in the ecu.

Hope this helps

Thanks mate looks like i will have to book it into the garage :(. Do you think it could be anything to do with different fule i put a tank of bt ultimate diesal then filled it up with asda's diesal?? Also is it worth putting in a fule additive to clean the enigine?? If so once you have added it do you need to keep adding it every time you fill the tank??

Thanks in advance

hey i have an 02 1.9tdi and i have a very quiet (some people cannot hear it but i can) sort of grinding swooshy noise (is swooshy a word?
probably not) when i accelerate it does not happen when i rev the engine only when i am in gear and moving and it also only happens at low revs, when the revs get up a bit the noise seems to dissapear, also at constant speed there is no noise
i can only assume this is something to do with the turbo but having never owned a "turbo'd" car before i have no idea (though to me it sounds bad)
