Got my cambelt, tensioners and waterpump replaced this week as i've done 80k miles - its an A6 2.5 tdi. It was done at a VAG specialist, who for the time being will remain nameless.
Anyway, I was suspicous that the car just didn;t look like it'd been worked on, like the front bumper which was well dirty, didn't have any smudges on it, where it'd been taken off, so I had a look under the bonnet, took the engine cover off, and unclipped the plastic cambelt cover. The toothed belt didn't look that worn, nor did it look brand new, and the belt to it's right, the smooth one, definately didn't look new.
Can anyone tell me how to easily locate the water pump, as if I can see it it should be easy to see if its new - i.e. it won't be coated in dirt/oil etc.
Thanks.

Cheers Rob. Is it number 9? I assume that is a diagram of just the right hand (passenger) side of the engine, so it's on the right, as you're looking from the front bumper?

No no. 9 is just an elbow pipe, the waterpump is the large thing in front (not to scale) with an impeller held on by two bolts, it doesn't seem to have a number.
However, I'm not convinced that the pic above is of your engine, what engine code do you have?

Not sure of the engine code, its a 2001 2.5 V6 Tdi. What is that engine? I would have thought if its a 2.5 tdi it'd be the same. If so, the water pump is between the fans and the engine block, looking at that?

The waterpump on the parts diagram on VAG (http://www.vagcat.com/) looks rather different, but doesn't show the location, that's all.

I got the diagram from www.vagcat.com (http://www.vagcat.com) i think its list the 3 different engine codes for a 2.5 AFB,AKN,AKE as the same pump.
