Hi folks, posting on behalf of my cousin thats havign an issue with his Passat.

He has a long standing issue with the ABS pump on his 99 Passast . H ehad it in a garage and was told his options are recondition or replace with one from a scrap yard (he's not in a position to replace new) . The garage told him a 2nd hand one would have to be coded to the car, costing whatever it is they charge for that (does the abs pump itself have it's own ecu? I would have thought any brakeing system ecu would be seperate, no? ). Assuimg it would have to be reprogrammed , would his own unit have to be programmed as well after it is reconditioned or will it drop straight back in?

It's showing a fault on the dash all the time.

Someone elwhere also suggested it might be an issue that could possibly be sorted with an ECU recode ?

Cheers for any help.

i had the same problem and cost me a fortuen to fix the problem i will share it with you

my abds light came on. brakes they were not as good as they were before.
got the car diagnosed
they told mt it is abs fault in the mot centre
cost me 30 paund well and all i learned it was that i have a problem with abs system
such a stupid man he told me he can only tell me what the problem is not fix it because he is mot tester and has the diagnos machine that is all
so i went to german car specialist diagnosed the problem 45 paunds costs me ofcourse
and been told that my abs pumb needs replacing so i bought a second hand part from yard 80 paunds get it replaced 150 paunds
took it for a drive brakes were so weak i felt so uncomfortable anyway the light come on in few minutes
so the mechanic said the part i got is in very bad condition so i went and get recinditioned pump
but did not work and the mechanic said
because i only bought the pump not the ecu with it ti doesnt work cost me another replacment 150 paund and over 100 paund for the pump
than i found a place where they recindition your pump and the ecu called ecu doctor i guess and they give you 2 years warranty so i sent my part to them got the part reconditioned cost araudn 100 paunds pluss postage
we piut the part same thing again
everyweek on my day off i wouyld take the car to the garage
so finally themmechaninc said they have to investigate the cables and sensors cost me another 100 paunds for labour and no result agsain the light is still on on on on
so i was after a orginal part as i am recomended
one day on ebay i was searcihg for part i found the same part i asked to the guy why u selling it he says ha had the same issue and bpught the part but before they fix is they checked the abs system fuse and replaced it so problem solved.

i did the same with my car cost me 1 paund for 3 fuses and prioblem sorted
just make sure my friend your issue is really with the pump not with somethign else
