just lately I am only getting 37 to the gallon around town out of my 2003 passat 1.9 tdi & not thrashing it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
it has been remapped from 105 bhp, had new MAF, new temp sensor & injector loom & has just been serviced

If it is an consolation, my 51 plate estate 130 TS (S)i which is remapped to 185bhp, gets about the same, but 50+ on a run. Towed a 400kg car trailer back today (unloaded) on the motorway and still got 40+mpg+. Cheers.

Ah 37 mpg - if only. I dream of reaching the 30s! My V6 4motion struggles to reach 27 - but it is wonderfully smooth....

whats the air temp like, mate of mine works at vw garage and when theres frost around they get loads saying mpg is crap. He reckons the engine has heaters in it and there not good enough in real cold weather

Interesting thought on air temperature - it is very cold for the UK - consistently 0 to -2 degrees. I also wonder about using Super Unleaded. The owners manual claims that 98 RON fuel will give me more performance and greater economy.

Cold weather will effect fuel usage. Something to do with denser and and combustion or something like that. During the warmer months, I was averaging 47 in my 2.0TDI Jetta. Now in this cold snap, that average has dropped to 39. I don't really think there is much you can do about it.

if your thinking of using super/98ron and your getting 37 mpg i,d be very happy, im only getting that from my diesel!

My w reg PD tdi returns 55 - 60mpg in the summer months (rural commutes), but struggles to get above 48 at the moment.

I find the colder air wont allow the engine to get to full working temp (exacerbated by having the heater on full!), or certainly not in the normal time (15 miles trip), and thus the engine is for this reason not anywhere near as efficient.

I've put some gaffa tape over the grill (dark car, dark tape...) which has helped to raise temps a bit, but i need more to make a marked difference.

the who said a what now?

the engine has heaters in it?

a diesel has glowplugs so I suppose he's right...at a stretch.

I really don't see the issue here, 37mpg around town from a 1.9tdi isn't what I'd consider low?

This came from a vw mech who says that as the block is alluminium it needs heaters in it or it never reaches temp, he reckons this time of year loads of customers are complaining about mpg (including me with 130bhp sport which was also doing less than 40mpg, i then went on a long run and it instantly went up to 48mpg. My advise is see what happens when warm weather comes Cheers Adie

there are heater elements in the block (im told) not glow plugs its due to ally blocks not getting up to temp

2.0 petrol normally gets about 33mpg mixed but more motorway, in the Summer months and now about 27mpg.

It seems to take half the distance again to reach normal operating temp.

Don't under estimate the amount of extra fuel that gets used when the engine is cold to help it warm up and to improve idle quality. Fuel atomisation and mixing is poor until the engine is at the correct temperature so excess fuel is required to get the engine to run as it would if it were 20 degrees warmer outside.

I think the permenant fan on the diesel isn't helping things either at present, with the heaters on in the cabin it'll take considerable longer to heat the engine up and then once it is up to temp heating the cabin can drop the temp alot if the engine is at idle.

I accidently filled up with Vpower diesel the other day and have had the best economy out of the car yet, despite the cold temps. Probably has better lubricating properties in these conditions than normal shell diesel and tescos.

JAmes.

I commute about 20miles each way to and from work, mostly at motorway speeds. At the moment am seeing on average 38mpg max out of each tankfull.
Longer journeys and traveling at 50-60mph seems to push it up into high 40's.
Mines a Pd 130. Doesn't like being driven around town and not when it never really wamrs up. As soon as its on a nice long trip, and warm mpg very quickly goes up.
Have only had it for a couple of months, so will be interesting to see in the summer what difference it makes....

I agree with saturn's reply; I have got exactly the same car but a remapped 51 plate, and my journeys at the moment are 6 miles to work each way, which the car does not like and 33 - 334mpg is all that is showing. With the engine hardly warming up and the heaters on, seats on etc., I guess it's no wonder. Roll on the warmer weather!

check tyre pressure

Saturn

check mine every week. also run them 1-2psi above normal value, which allows for a bit of leakage etc. So tyre pressure is not the problem

my car - 2003 Tdi 130

My trip to work - 4 miles (all urban), recent MPG has been 30-33 mpg.

Recently I used to have a 25 mile trip to work (extra-urban), average speed 50mph - during which I got 50-55 mpg.

I deliver curries 1 night a week, all urban driving, during which I'm pretty heavy footed. In these sub zero conditions, it drops to about 28 mpg.

They are big cars, stop start urban driving in cold conditions obvioulsy have a big effect on mpg. Still would have it over any petrol engine, any day.
