wipers sticking

While driving along the other day my wipers ,which were set to intermittent, got halfway across the screen and stopped but the motor kept buzzing away even when in the off position. they failed to work in any position, motor buzzing and wipers half way up the screen. I pulled over and gently moved them by hand and they reverted back to off position. next time i checked and tried them, same thing, halfway up they stick and motor keeps buzzing (unless you turn off ignition of course) until you ease them slightly and they drop back to off. There is nothing jamming the mechanism and the car is in great condition overall - :confused::1zhelp:

ps - failed to add this is a 1994 passat gl 16v saloon

The wiper mech. is known to sieze up.
Try WD40 or remove to clean properly.
