Hi guys,

I am purchasing a second hand Golf, 1.6 Se 16 v 2000 w reg.

When starting the car, if I turn the key a hard, there is a short noise which happens. The car starts perectly, doesnt cut out, but im woried about this noise.

A few have suggested power steering, jamming starter motor. I am clueless and would therefore appreciate any help.

Also, when the car is running, if a door is opened it does not show up on the dash board, as being open. But, when the boot is opened it does???

The guy has agreed to get the problems fixed, but want to be clued up!!

Thanks.
x

for the light not working its prob the door lock itself common enough
for the noise on start up if its like a grinding noise would think its the starter what you can do is remove the stater and spray the bendix with brake cleaner and then spray with a good spray grease (worths) refit and it should be ok have done this many times and has always worked if it is the starter causing the noise

Hi sorry to hijack the thread :o

My starter motor is also noise when I start the car, is it easy to remove and clean ... ? I mean is it something I can do at home easy enough or does it require a specialist tool or somesuch ... :o:Blush:

Hi

I have a 1999 1.6SE Golf and a 2002 2.0GTi Golf and they are both making a grinding noise when you start them up. The GTi had a new starter motor fitted just over a year ago. This seems like a firly common problem on Golf mark 4's - or am i just unlucky??

Taking the starter motor out is not too difficult but can take some time - The Haynes manual gives it three spanners for difficulty!!!

Same problem with starter motor on mine. It's a bugger to get out from the top, may be easier from underneath? Anyway I took it out, cleaned and greased it, and when I put it back it was silent. For a day! Gonna try again

To take the starter out is not a specialist job but does need some effort. If you do it from the top you don't have to go under the car. You have to remove the battery cover , battery, battery mounting and then take off the starter (two bolts).

Simply taking off all the plastic bits for the battery cover takes some time.

I have 2 golfs (2.0 GTi and 1.6SE) and they are both making a grinding noise occasionally. II have removed the starter and cleaned the bendix but would like to know if oiling / greasing is a good idea or should it be left dry? Cleaning helps but does not seem to be a 100% cure....

If you have a 3dr golf then you have a light that shows the boot is open if you have a 5dr one then you have a light that shows if the doors and boot are open i think.

i have 1.9td N reg golf
when you removed the motor did the whole stud come out or did the nuts come off?
the nuts on mine are seized and it seems the stud is begining to turn.
Should the studs turn?
or should the nuts turn?
