Hi all, sorry that my first post is a question! I have an M reg 100 Avant 2.0 (ABK engine) with the infamous intermittant stalling problem. I have tried the following, but to no avail :

Checked car on VAG.COM - no fault codes showing
New fuel pump and fuel pump relay
New fuel filter
New throttle position sensor
New airflow meter
Secondhand ECU fitted (ouch!)
New ECU relay (No. 30)
Cleaned ICV
New dizzy cap and leads and plugs
Engine bay earth connections checked and cleaned

As you can see i`ve tried everything suggested on the various forums and am pulling my hair out! I am a single dad and need my car for the school run. I`ve spent too much money on the car to cut my losses and run so i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what i can try next. I do all the work myself and had always thought I was quite handy with the spanners...until now! lol. Thanks again.

Hi,

You could try cleaning the throttle butterfly and insides of the throttle body. an accumulation of 'gunge' reduces the airflow available at idle - this overworks the ISV.
Also check for vacuum leaks, including breather hoses and the small ones, eg. distributor

I had this on my 100 Avant (ABK).
My local specialist cleaned the throttle body and no more cutting out. Cost around £50.

Oddly, before the tb clean the car always ran better with very little cutting out if I started the car with the brake pedal depressed.

Thanks for the input guys, I gave the throttle body and internals a thorough clean when I replaced the throttle position sensor but problem still persisted. I have had some feedback from the 80/90 forum and am saving up for a new distributor/hall sender and will post results when I have fitted this. Also replaced the coolant temperature sensor with a gen audi one last week and car ran ok - then began cutting out again on an attempted long run! Doh!
