cant comment on the intervals but personally i would never let a timing belt do 60,000 miles,i would also get the timing belt kit from vw,ive recently done mine and was advised by a good source to not go for cheaper alternatives where the belt and tensioner are concerned

I'd have it done by VW, as there would be a two year guarantee on parts and labour.

:dunno: And does anyone have any idea how much that would cost on 97 A6 2.8V6?
Mortgage time?

4 years or 40k miles is the interval. Don't push it, it's not worth it. People have been reporting cambelt failures at below 40k miles on this site, so any more is taking a big risk. I had mine done on my Passat by VW for £275 including all tensioners and 2 year warranty. The warranty also covers associated parts caused by the belt if it fails, and all labour, not just the cost of the belt.

find a good vw dealer and get them to do it spercial procedures exist for pd engines dont risk getting the timing wrong or fitting cheap parts otherwise your risking a possible expensive repair

Went to the local vw dealer and they did it and the altenator and air con belt for £278 .
My uncle who is a mechanic reckons it would take the best part of a day which it dit at vw .
This is a bargain for the work involved so no point comprimising with cheap parts , plus they give you a 2 year waranty with the parts .

Thats an incredible deal from a VW dealership!
Which one was it? How was the service? Was that the first price they quoted?
I want to know more!

Its in elgin, In the north of scotland.
They quoted £275 over the phone just to replace the timing belt and tensioners . Then they phoned and said the other 2 belts were needing done . So i said go ahead . spoke to the mechanic who was doing it before he started and he said it would take about 4 hours to do .
8 hours later they phoned and said the car was ready went down ( expecting a huge bill ) and to my amazement it was it was £278 .
The service was great and i couldnt be happier .
I think the all must have a set price cause it was someone that replyed to this thread that said they were only £275 .
I thought he had typed it wrong to start with but no .
a true bargain .

Maybe different franchises have different prices. All the ones local to me in Devon quoted over £100 more for cambelt and tensioners. I took my car back to Wales were it had previously been serviced and it was well worth the fuel cost.

i can change a cambelt on a passat in about 1 hour. main dealers make loads of money from them as they charge 3 hours labour but realistically every expereinced vw mechanic can do alot quicker

if you got a v6 passat then dont come anywhere near me.....as thats more like 2 days. but seriously since you take the bumper off and the engine is longitudinal you have everything you need easy and accessible to do and quick easy job.

Just had mine done by local mechanic whose work I know and trust - I have used him for last 10 years or so.

He did my 130 TDi Sport:

- VW timing belt & full kit replacement (incl. new hydraulic tensioner)
- water pump
- air con belt
- full service, incl. all filters, pads etc (all VW)

£483

Glasgow area.

Intervals are 60k on a PD and costs are around 300 quid from the dealers.Like someone has already pointed out warrantied work from VW dealers as well for 24 months parts and labour.

Front bumper off job ( 20 mins) and then around 4 hours to remove and refit belt, tensioner etc.

I had my 99 tdi sport done by VW Yeovil for £250 all in plus a courtesy car..You get a 2yr unlimited warranty and Genuine parts. I did the previous one myself, but older and wiser now. I was a professional mechanic in the days when things were repaired not replaced, but I have posted a picture of the job a while back and it is a biggish job. Front off or moved forward and it takes about 4-5 hrs.. By all means have a go yourself if you are handy with spanners and take your time, but mark everything and use genuine bits! Good Luck!

I would like to meet the person who reckons a belt can be changed in 1 hour!!!!!(Unless he means this is just to get the front off!!) he could earn a fortune.. It takes VW about 4 and it took me about 6 the first time. The last time I posted on this subject I had several replies concerning the method. a. It is possible to do it the "official" way and just slide the lock carrier forward. This is ok if you don't mind skinning your knuckles! but b. just take the front off or swing round as in the pic.
I realise that it is a bit of a glib answer to say get it done by VW,but if money is tight then it just has to be done DIY.
But do it if 4yrs or 60000k has gone by and use genuine bits...

I Have A Fair Idea & Have Checked This Job Out In Detail, & As You've Described Its Got To Take 2 Hours To Gain Entry To The Front, You Are Definatly Correct.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post in ages so please bear with me.

I've got a quote from my local VW dealer for €630 and from the same group who have a skoda dealership in a different garage for €700.

I can't belive the diference in proces between the UK and Ireland.

I was serioulsy thinking about buying the parts myself and then getting a local mechanic to do it for me but reading the warnings I've become a bit more reluctant.

I need to get the radiator changed as its been leaking for the past while so I presume that it would be best to get it all done together .

I'm expecting €1000 plus:zx11: for the total.

Would anyone be able to give me a list of parts that need changing.

the car is a 2001 1.9 TDI AWX with air-con.

Thanks

Pat
