2002 A4 Tdi SE aircon fault

[Staffbull]

System if full of 134a (gas) and fuses are intact but she refuses to switch on the aircon - the econ button is always on!!!

new to the car (1 week) am I doing sommat wrong - I take it the econ button should just toggle the aircon on or off?
