Hi. I have a 1996 VW Passat 1.9TDI estate. I'm getting very bad fuel cunsupmtion at the moment - for £25 of diesel I only get about 310 miles. I don't know much about diesels. What should I be checking for. I've checked all the hoses and fuel lines and can't see anything leaking. Is there a common fault somewhere. I would appeciate if someone could help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Sorry boss but after my whole calculation your diesel consumption is around 5.4 L/100 km. I think this is very result according to the weather and the age of the car.
Best regards

Working on the cost of diesel being 95 pence a litre. 25 quid buys you 26.3 litres. 4.545 litres=1 Gallon so 26.3/4.545=5.78. 310 miles/5.78=53.6mpg. I'd be happy with that

I have just bought a 2001 TDI 130 Sport estate and average 41-42mpg, which is very poor as i previously owned a 1998 TDI 110 SE saloon and averaged top 40's and on a regular run from Newcastle to Barnsley at an average of 80-85 mph the car returned 50-52mpg.
That car was brill but im not sure about this one and i am trying a few simple things such as Air mass meter, but this has made no difference.
If you find a simple fault please log it on the forum, as i think there are lots of people out there disapointed with the MPG.:aargh4:

310 miles on £25 sounds fine to me too, especially with a passat. I get about 550 miles from a full tank which is usually around £38 now, with diesel usually around 89.9 down here. And mine's a little fabia hatchback.

I've got a 2001 130 SE which averages around 42mpg. I was a little disappointed, as I too hear of 50+ from older TDI [non PD] variants. I can get more if I drive gently, but whats the point of 130PS if you drive like your grandad?.

It runs well otherwise - I've had the dealer run a diagnostic and there were no errors and they seem to think this is typical for this model/engine combination. They did say they have to replace MAF sensors regualrly [they said around 70-80k was typical].

I have had conflicting reports on the hot-wire MAF sensors, some technicians claim they either work or they don't, whilst others claim they can look OK on a static test but mis-behave when the engine is under load.

I've ordered a VAG COM interface for my laptop, so maybe I'll find out a little more if there's enough functionality in the software to capture some data under load.

Cheers,
Guy

Can anyone

I get on average 40+ just out of my 2002 130TDI Sports Estate, it does have a load up most of the time and I have a reasonably heavy right foot, but heres a thought, when I brought the car last year I noticed that when I filled it to the brim it would be leaking fuel for a few days afterwards, as if an overflow was working. I returned the car to the dealer to look at and he said that there is a cap or valve on top of the fuel tank that and that it was loose and fuel was being lost there, he tightened it and I havent had the problem since; have you all checked that the fuel isnt being lost by this method rather than being used by the engine?
