I've got a '9 8v GTI that's done 38k miles since new (yes really - I owned it) and has recently developed a misfire. It occurs only under load and between about 1500-2500 RPM. It is a falter as if the engine is not getting enough fuel, but at higher revs it is fine - would drive all day at 5000 RPM+ if I wanted to. Any ideas?

Also, does this Aug '96 car have an OBD-II socket? If so where is it?

Thanks in advance...

Such a misfire can be due to several potential causes and a check on an engine analyser would probably save you the cost of replacing parts unnecessarily while searching for the answer.
Just about any component in the fuel or ignition systems could be at fault - distributor cap, ignition coil, plug leads, spark plugs, contaminated fuel etc.
The symptoms you describe suggest that it is related to a lack of HT ignition voltage but that is by no means certain.

Fixed it! When I retuned the radio I got a ticking noise - thought aah, must be the HT leads and it was... All fixed now.

Thanks...

Any ideas about if/where for the OBD-II?

If you look at the second sketch down here: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/dlc.html

Under one of the removeable covers you should see something that looks like this : http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/2x2.html

Hope this helps
