Help neded for new Audi Cabriolet 1996 owner?
Hello, just bought an Audi Cabriolet and I have a few problems that I'm struggling with. 1 The steering wheel needs replacing it has an airbag but will a A4 or A3 wheel fit as all the audi 80 wheels dont seem to have airbags? 2 The roof unlocked warning light keeps flashing although the roof is secure, any suggestions?

i had the steering wheel off in my 80 a few times, but it had no air bag.
there is one bolt that secures the steering wheel under the horn/airbag.
my understanding is that this bolt is the same across all early models, so you should be able to pop an early a4 steering wheel on with no problems.
try phoning an independant audi specialist such as 'all audi' in bristol or similar for conformation on this. as for the roof sensor, it could just be a loose conection on the sensor in the sun roof. if you haven't got a haynes manual then get one ASAP as these should explain where your sensors are then you can see if the wire has come loose.

hope this helps a little

good luck:biglaugh:

thanks for the advice, cant get a haynes manual for a Cabriolet and to be honest the Haynes Audi 80 manual is pretty useless. In the end I got a newwheel from Audi £400 ouch!

Hi,
I have a 1995 cabrio and sometimes have a similar problem with the warning light for the roof. I think its the known issue of the cables breaking down at the hinges of the bootlid (too much bending over time). I wrote about it in other threads here a while back I think... there is even a diagram a guy had to show you how to fix it by inserting a new cable section in where it bends. Not difficult to do if you have an afternoon to spare.

Thnks for the feedback, as it happens the cables in the boot have been crimped back together however it turns out it was a faulty handbrake switch that was the problem. As for the steering wheel I ended up getting one from Audi £400!

Looking to upgrade the standard 80 wheel on my cab (has airbag) to the newer a4/a3 one and just wondered how easy it is to fit? Are there any extra bits to buy which aren't on the standard steering wheel like bolts etc?

Cheers

I couldnt do it, Audi advised that an A4 wheel does not fit because it has an adjustable steering coulumn which the cab does not. It may be worth you going to a scrappy an pulling the one off and taking a look first. To take your wheel off you need to release the airbag first which is done by releasing to star type bolts from the rear of the wheel, once you get the airbag off everything else is pretty straight forward. You will also need to get the airbag reset £40 by Audi but any auto electrician should be able to do this. Hope this helps?
