polo gear box noise

2000 1.4 polo 5 speed manual gear box bearing whine goes quite on over run but not evident in first and second gear are there any common bearing failures in diff or gears

clutch release bearing is very common for wear. it will squeek when the clutch is pressed. the gearboxes in general arent great on mk4 and 5 polos though and its very common for boxes to fail on thrashed examples.
