The driver's side is a lot easier than the passenger side. Take care not to hammer the CV shaft in order to get the best angle to allow it to drop clear. I found raising both wheels was the best approach, as you can manouvre the steering as required without putting due stress on any steering components while in parked position.

Also fit a quality CV boot. You don't want to be doing this job again in 6 months. GKN components are excellent.

For the price of a new CV joint and boot kit, I would spend a few dollars more and get the whole axle. We carry the kits for ~$100 http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-Quattro-1.8T/Search/Cv_Boot/?salesrep=CArmbruster&utm_source=vwaudiworld&utm_medium=forum&utm_content=CArmbruster&utm_campaign=postreply

And we carry new axles for $120 http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-Quattro-1.8T/Search/Axle/?salesrep=CArmbruster&utm_source=vwaudiworld&utm_medium=forum&utm_content=CArmbruster&utm_campaign=postreply

And those are in USD, so they get even cheaper for you guys across the Atlantic.
